Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) presents unique challenges. The joint anatomy is complex, with both hinge and sliding excursions. This jaw joint articulates the mandibular bone to the skull, and is surrounded by a capsule. Within this capsule is a movable articular disc. This entire complex is under the control of facial nerves, facial muscles, tendons, hormones, the occlusion of the dentition (teeth) and mastication stresses.
Orofacial pain can result from temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but it can also result from other muscular and dental problems like bruxism (teeth grinding), facial nerve problems, stress, and even hormonal imbalances.
When someone experiences pain, clicking, cracking or locking of this joint, the sources of this joint derangement will be multiple. There will not be a simple solution for TMJ and orofacial pain. The treatment plan is likely to be multi-modal, and involve both medical & dental interventions.
Our regenerative treatments represent a key aspect of joint protection both for both within the capsule, and also the surrounding tendons, muscles and ligaments supporting the outside part of the capsule.
We also have the capabilities of fabricating dental jaw-reposition devices, also key in TMJ & oro-facial pain management.
TMJ and orofacial pain may resolve only temporarily, necessitating future treatments. If severe TMJ surgery can also be considered.
